In Apex Legends history, this year was closer to a decade. Fans were treated to an avalanche of narratives including both new and old legends—and that's before considering the 208-page mythology book released by Respawn Entertainment in February.
Even outside of Pathfinder's Quest, a lot transpired in Apex. With the addition of Valkyrie and Ash, Respawn provided fans with four new challengers, a new map, and greater Titanfall ties than ever before. The Legacy Antigen, the ninth season's mission, included two parallel narratives, both of which were crucial in setting up significant developments for some of the legends as well as the overall lore.
With so many storylines and tales taking place during the year, it's easy to get lost. The following is a summary of the important narrative events that occurred in Apex in 2021.
Season 8 has Fuse, Armageddon, And Numerous Arm Jokes.
Our first legend of the year 2021 arrived with a bang. Walter "Fuse" Fitzroy, Apex's Explosives Enthusiast, came from the planet Salvo to join the Apex Games in season eight. For decades, his planet had fought off the Syndicate's ambitions, but this resistance had created a shaky power balance, with various warlords vying for the throne. Despite Salvo's refusal to join the Syndicate when the Outlands Civil War concluded in 2722, the planet reversed course and accepted the Syndicate Treaty ten years later.
Fuse, the Bonecage Champion, became eligible to compete in the Apex Games once Salvo joined the Syndicate space. Margaret "Mad Maggie" Khere, a Syndicate opponent and Fuse's childhood friend, was understandably enraged.
Fuse's entrance brought with him his own plot. After Mad Maggie stormed Kings Canyon in the eighth season quest, Armageddon, the legends took on Mad Maggie. Maggie's apparent death brought this secluded plot to a close.
Maggie launched an attack on Fuse, which resulted in both of them being thrown into the air. They were clinging to a ledge, but she let go and fell to her death. Armageddon didn't have much of an impact on the rest of the story, at least for the time being, but it did set the stage for a significant development for Fuse.
Respawn also shared two key pieces of information on Twitter in addition to the quest. The first was a two-part comic starring Caustic and Wattson about the scientist's intention to gas Solace and how Wattson foiled his plan. The other is about Wraith and Bangalore, and it begins The Legacy Antigen, a crucial arc that will resurface in the following season. In our season eight legend recap, we go through those in further depth.
Valkyrie, Blisk, and Legacy in Season 9
The ninth season of Apex is a throwback. The terrifying sound of Viper's Flight Core during the boss fight is well-known to Titanfall 2 players. They can now meet his daughter, and the skies are hers.
When Valkyrie arrived in the Apex Games in season nine, she made a Titan-sized impression. She blamed her father's death on Kuben Blisk, the former Apex Predators commander and current Apex Games commissioner.
Blisk gave her a chance to start over, away from her father's shadow: an Apex Games card. Valkyrie was drawn into the fray as a result of this, but it was all part of The Legacy Antigen, Apex's longest mission to date. Several characters' arcs were put in motion by this two-part mission. In our special Legacy Antigen recap, we go over everything in great detail.
Appearance of Seer in Season 10
If Valkyrie brought strong ties to Titanfall, her successor sprang out of nowhere, but that doesn't mean he didn't win over fans. Seer, the Boreas Ambush Artist, arrived at the Apex Games from the Arenas, and the build-up to his arrival was as remarkable as he himself.
Respawn teased Seer with a folk tale called The Moth and the Flame, which warned of a curse, rather than simply disclosing the new mythology. This myth was later discovered to be part of Boreas folklore, explaining why Seer's community believed he was cursed. An asteroid smashed the planet's moon the night he was born, and people considered it as a bad omen.
Seer is a story about overcoming a perceived curse. He claimed defects or curses are what make people strong and unique on a season 10 loading screen, as long as they define the curse themselves and don't let others define it for them. The artist personifies this notion, taking ownership of the curse and incorporating it into his self. "The youngster who was born under a dreadful omen and a terrible myth has turned this story into an even bigger legend." His bio describes him as "an emblem of the rejected, the unaccepted, and the brazenly original."
Season 11 : The Escape, Ash and Storm Point
Even if you don't consider the two and a half years (and roughly two in-universe decades) between Titanfall 2 and Apex, Ash's release has been one of the most anticipated in Apex history. Since then, Ash has been a part of the lore as the artifact that the legendary gathered in The Broken Ghost.
Horizon's long-running story arc is also touched by Ash's arrival, as Respawn revealed what fans had believed for nearly a year: that Ash was actually Dr. Reid, Horizon's aide who left her alone in space.
After the events of Pathfinder's Quest in 2658, Hammond Robotics staff saved Dr. Ashleigh Reid's life by turning her into a simulacrum. The horror of the experience—both the impending death and the simulacrum process—split her personality into two: Ash and Leigh. Most of the time, Ash is in charge, and he's the same ruthless mercenary from Titanfall 2. Leigh is a dormant character who only emerges in certain occasions and in a few in-game jokes.
Horizon's son, Newton, was killed, and Leigh knows what happened to him. Reid was one of the few persons who seemed to know he had left the facility before the explosion, although he was thought dead.
Horizon needs to know what Leigh knows. Ash isn't going to allow her.
This predicament began a major part of the tale this season and continues in the seasonal quest Trouble in Paradise. So far, that's the bulk of the legend, but there's more. Escape also exposed fans to Storm Point, a tropical paradise in Gaea that is both paradisiac and desolate. When the Corporation left the Outlands, as well as the people of Gaea, the former IMC base was abandoned—until the Syndicate discovered it.
Storm Point still has a few secrets up its sleeve that will most likely be revealed next year. The wreckage of Bangalore and Jackson's ship, the IMS Hestia, has been turned into a Storm Point POI called Shipfall, which could serve as another plot point in that story cycle. According to the Paquette Repair Service loading page, Wattson, Crypto, and Wraith are also wanting to rebuild a machine. Trouble In Paradise, the 11th season mission, promises to set up key developments for Ash, Leigh, Horizon, and Apex's long-term narrative. That's not even counting the four new legends (and potentially a new map) that will be released throughout the year.
Apex mythology has great promise in 2022, as evidenced by superb storytelling throughout this year. With so many loose ends and a good portion of the season quest remaining, Apex lore shows great promise in 2022.
